Explore Lesotho through a soccer journey, where you not only play sports but also connect with the local culture and community.

Lesotho: Where Soccer Meets Culture

On a summer day in Lesotho, a gentle breeze wafted across the highlands as I sat in the shade outside the Hokahanya Inn in Maseru, the capital of this beautiful country. From my vantage point, I could see distant clouds gathering, promising afternoon rains. Right before me was a soccer pitch built by the nonprofit organization Rise International, dedicated to developing and supporting social enterprises across Africa. The Stadium of Life, completed in May 2026, became the first soccer field on the continent constructed entirely from sustainable wood.

Despite its recent opening, the stadium was already buzzing with activity. A group of children in bright green uniforms played soccer under the watchful eyes of coaches who blew whistles and guided them through fluid formations, dribbling between closely placed cones. You might find it odd to play soccer at a hotel, but Hokahanya, which means 'to connect' in Sesotho, also hosts the charity Kick4Life and a soccer academy. All profits from the hotel are reinvested into the academy programs, giving children a chance to succeed both on the field and in life.

Kick4Life: A Soccer Academy with a Social Heart

Before the Stadium of Life was built, Kick4Life was already recognized as one of the country's top training facilities. Thuso Khoarane, a 20-year-old who has been playing here since he was 12, shared, "This place is a dream destination for any child wanting to excel in soccer." The academy has built a reputation for itself. Currently, he plays for Juventude, a team formed in 2024 comprising players who have grown through the academy. After just two seasons, Juventude was promoted to the Lesotho Premier League but opted out in 2026 due to FIFA regulations preventing Premier League players from receiving scholarships.

Kick4Life not only helps local children but also opens its doors to global talent. At Hokahanya Inn, the academy welcomes university clubs, business groups, and even international grassroots teams. While many African travel itineraries focus on safaris, these travelers come to Lesotho for a different experience—stepping off the sidelines and onto the field to play with local players in a country few have ventured to.

Connecting with the Basotho Community

Here, against the backdrop of the Maloti Mountains, visitors connect with the Basotho community through a shared passion for the world's most popular sport. Those wanting to blend soccer with social impact can join the academy's famous All-Star Tour. Held biannually, this two-week journey costs $5,000 per person, bringing around 24 travelers from around the globe to Hokahanya Inn.

The hotel, decorated with soccer memorabilia and staffed by friendly employees in uniforms, serves as the primary revenue source for the organization. One hundred percent of the tour profits are reinvested into the academy. Throughout the trip, visitors gain a deeper understanding of Lesotho through small soccer matches, watching a professional game by Juventude, and competing with local teams.

Cultural Connections Through Sports

Playing soccer on a new field can be a challenge, especially if you come from another country. However, the All-Star tours are designed to help visitors connect with locals rather than just observe from a distance. According to Kick4Life's National Director, Motlatsi Nkhahle, the matches provide an opportunity to understand daily life. "Playing soccer helps us grasp the context in which we are working," he said.

By engaging with players and fans, travelers forge relationships that extend beyond the sport, giving them clearer insights into the environment that influences Kick4Life's mission. Although dubbed “All-Star,” the trip emphasizes friendly competition over player excellence. Travelers don’t need to be star athletes to participate; some prefer cheering from the sidelines while others enjoy actively competing.

Exploring Lesotho: Exciting Activities

Activities off the field are equally important for travelers wanting to explore Lesotho's culture. The All-Star tour kicks off with a guided hike up Thaba Bosiu, a rocky plateau known as the birthplace of the nation. Here, King Moshoeshoe I defended the nation during wars and upheavals in the 1820s.

Visitors will get to experience Lesotho's heritage through cultural performances at Thetsane High School, collaborating with Kick4Life's youth programs. Students have spent months rehearsing traditional dances like mokhibo, showcasing their culture to All-Star guests.

Another highlight for visitors is horseback riding amidst the breathtaking landscapes of rural Lesotho. The terrain here makes road construction difficult, so most people use Basotho horses to navigate the rocky paths. Along the way, guests may encounter riders clad in colorful blankets adorned with traditional Basotho symbols.

Contributing to a Brighter Future

Hewitt, a traveler from England, shared that the most impactful aspect of his trip was the meaningful engagement. The lessons from sports and games go beyond the matches. "The messages you convey through soccer will also affect daily life," he shared. "Everyone is putting in their best effort." Throughout the journey, visitors also have the opportunity to volunteer with programs guided by local coaches, discussing issues that Basotho youth face, such as HIV and gender-based violence.

Through activities that equip the youth, travelers become temporary teammates in Kick4Life's mission, contributing not only to the present of Lesotho but also to a brighter future.
