Serene Surroundings at Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda

Sipping a refreshing green drink at the Zen pool bar after a morning yoga session, I couldn't help but wonder: How did I end up at such a tranquil resort? Located on the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda offers an experience that is entirely different from the larger Caribbean resorts. As the first resort in Club Med's Exclusive Collection in the Americas, this destination emphasizes health and sustainability while showcasing local culture, all set against the backdrop of pristine beaches and lush forests.

Upon entering the open lobby with its eco-chic architecture and high palapa roof, I was greeted with a welcome drink and settled into a large, comfortable rattan chair. Alejandro, the customer service manager, quickly set everything up for a seamless vacation: a WhatsApp group for requests, the Club Med app for endless daily activities, and a wristband that served as both a room key and access to the resort. The attentive service, along with premium amenities and wellness programs, distinctly defined the experience at Club Med Michès.

Distinct Villages at Club Med Michès

The 93-acre resort is divided into four unique villages: family-friendly Explorer Cove, the central Caribbean Paradise, and the adult-only Archipelago and Emerald Jungle. I stayed in the Emerald Jungle, which focuses on wellness, while Archipelago caters to couples with private pools. Unlike the family activity areas, this retreat gives the feel of a boutique hideaway nestled within the larger resort. The Zen pool, spa, and daily wellness programs are just steps away.

My room was equipped with smart climate control and radiated the peaceful energy of its surroundings, featuring deep green tones paired with wood and modern design, all inspired by the lush landscape. Facing the bed was a cozy seating area, perfect for my morning espresso before stepping out onto my private balcony. With a design that leans towards neighboring balconies, it felt intriguingly secluded. The bathroom was equally tranquil, adorned with turquoise tiles, high-end bath products, and a spacious rain shower, creating a spa-like experience to wash away salt, sand, and sunscreen.

Exciting Activities at Club Med Michès

One of the most exciting aspects of Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda is the plethora of activities available. The resort offers over 25 different options, from yoga and fitness to archery, kayaking, and aerial ropes courses. Your experience here will depend on how you take advantage of what’s available, but one thing is clear at Michès: wellness is at the forefront, and I completely immersed myself in it. As a busy mom with two young sons who would absolutely love this place, I reminded myself that there’s no shame in prioritizing self-care.

My mornings began at the Treetop Wellness Canopy, a two-story wooden structure nestled among palm trees where yoga classes take place with views of the forest. Instructor Liat Philipson struck a rare balance, making the class accessible for newcomers (including my husband during his first yoga session) while still challenging seasoned yogis like me. That welcoming energy permeated the entire resort. Whether I was learning how to surf, enhancing my tennis skills, or trying aerial yoga, each sport was guided by experienced instructors, many of whom were locals, alongside an international team of experts.

Exploring the Sea at Club Med Michès

Returning to the adults-only Zen pool never got old. This natural pool, surrounded by fountains, a koi pond, and shaded greenery, offered a view that kept the beach hidden from sight. The pool bar served refreshing detox juices, smoothies, and cocktails made with local fruits. Still, I couldn't resist the allure of the beach. Club Med Michès is located on a peninsula with a long coastline lined with palm trees, warm and clear waters. The sun loungers and hammocks are rarely crowded, creating perfect moments for relaxation with a book, listening only to the sound of the waves.

For maximum relaxation, I indulged in treatments at Cinq Mondes Spa. After a personalized massage using natural products from the French spa brand, I lounged between hot and cold plunge pools, sipping chamomile tea post-treatment. There’s even a series of outdoor hydrotherapy showers with various water features, providing the ultimate relaxation experience. The beautiful yet wild surroundings of the resort are also worth exploring.

Local Cuisine at Club Med Michès

At Club Med Michès, dining is not an afterthought; it’s an integral part of the experience. My mornings always started with an iced vanilla latte from the Coffee House, followed by a barefoot stroll along the long, quiet beach. Throughout the day, I dined at one of the three on-site restaurants. Cayuco, the resort's main buffet restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with 10 serving stations, offering everything from Dominican specialties to international dishes. One station featured tandoori chicken, while another prepared cacio e pepe on a massive cheese wheel. A dessert station loaded with sweet treats made it impossible to resist trying everything.

For lunch, I chose Coco Plum Beach Lounge, where they serve authentic Dominican barbacoa right on the sand, accompanied by live music and the sound of the waves. The buffet here included delicious Mauritius roti, a warm bread with rich cultural influences from India, Africa, and Creole, paired with curry chicken, rice, vegetables, chutneys, and hearty sauces.

Dinners were lighter, focusing on Caribbean cuisine with farm-to-table specialties and fresh ingredients. One evening featured tropical tuna ceviche, whole grilled fish, and seafood pasta cooked with lobster, all enjoyed in an open-air setting by the beach. On one night, I participated in a rum tasting held outside the main restaurant. Here, I sampled various flavored rums, including Mamajuana, the Dominican Republic's signature drink made from a blend of herbs, bark, rum, red wine, and honey, resulting in an earthy and spiced spirit.

On my final night, I dined at Coal and Copper Steakhouse, the only restaurant not included in the resort's all-inclusive package. My four-course dinner featured grilled steaks and traditional sides like steamed spinach and creamy mashed potatoes, truly worth every penny. The abundance of high-quality food and drink felt almost indulgent, but thanks to the emphasis on quality ingredients, including fresh fish and produce from local farmers, I didn’t feel overly stuffed after each meal.

After dinner, I immediately ordered a cocktail from La Perla Bar and found a seat to enjoy the nightly entertainment. Each evening was a celebration, starting with acrobatics and international performances, culminating in vibrant Dominican dance.
