Introduction to Ming Kee Chicken Rice
If you're a frequent visitor to Bishan, chances are you’ve heard of Ming Kee Chicken Rice. This chicken rice establishment is renowned for its cold chicken and is often dubbed as serving the \"best chicken rice in Bishan.\" Conveniently located at Kim San Leng Food Centre, it’s just a short walk from the Bishan bus interchange and MRT station.
Dining Experience at Ming Kee
Knowing that Ming Kee Chicken Rice often has long queues during lunch hours, I decided to arrive early to sample their offerings. Even during brunch hours, the place was bustling with diners enjoying their chicken rice. The chicken here is chilled in cold water and stored on ice after cooking, resulting in a soft, jelly-like layer beneath the skin that creates a unique texture when eaten.
Menu and Pricing
When it came time to order, I opted for the Steamed Chicken Rice Set A, priced at S$7 (approximately 120,000 VND). This set includes chicken, rice, and vegetables beautifully plated separately. I must say, the portion size is quite generous for the price! If you’re a fan of kailan, you can order it as part of a set for S$8 (about 135,000 VND), or separately for S$4 or S$6.
Chicken feet lovers will also delight in the Crystal Chicken Feet (S$3/S$5). However, as a rice enthusiast, I was a bit disappointed with the rice itself. While it was fluffy and not mushy, it lacked the rich flavor and aroma I had hoped for. If you’re looking for a lighter chicken rice option, this could be the right place for you.
Chicken Evaluation
Upon seeing the chicken, I regretted not opting for the softer chicken portion and instead went for the "Russian roulette" method of choosing, ending up with breast meat. While there’s nothing wrong with that, I was looking forward to the characteristic gelatinous skin that the restaurant is known for. Nevertheless, the breast meat was tender and well-seasoned, making it enjoyable.

Vegetables and Dipping Sauce
The accompanying bean sprout salad was flavorful and crunchy. Instead of frying, the vegetables were blanched and drizzled with sauce, providing a refreshing taste. However, the chili dipping sauce was a bit watery and lacked the strong spiciness I was expecting, despite having plenty of garlic.
Conclusion
Perhaps I wasn’t fortunate during my visit to Ming Kee Chicken Rice, but I don’t think I would return solely for the chicken rice. While the cold chicken is a unique highlight, I felt the overall dish didn’t leave a particularly strong impression as I had anticipated. If you’re looking to explore distinctive chicken rice options in Singapore, you might want to check out a few other spots to find a flavor that suits you better.
