Introducing the Maharaja Lounge
During my recent stopover in San Francisco, I had the chance to visit Air India's Maharaja Lounge at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). This lounge may be compact, but it leaves a lasting impression with its attentive service and unique Indian cuisine.
Location and Opening Hours
The lounge is conveniently located in the international terminal at Gate A, which is quite sensible considering the long walk from Gate A to Gates D (Air Canada Lounge) or E, F, G (United Clubs). I spent about 15 minutes walking from Gate D to get here.
The lounge is open from 6:00 AM to 11:55 PM. Although the Star Alliance website states that the lounge is open 24/7, this is not the case in reality.
Access Privileges
The Maharaja Lounge is exclusively for Star Alliance Gold members, including passengers traveling on flights from airlines within this alliance (plus one guest), as well as first-class and business-class travelers (without a guest). I used my United Star Alliance Gold card to gain access to this lounge, even though my flight was domestic.
Ambiance and Decor
The lounge is divided into two main areas: a bar section serving drinks and a dining area with tables and a buffet. Around 8:30 PM, the lounge was quite busy with many passengers waiting for an EVA flight to Taipei departing from a nearby gate.

Culinary Delights at the Lounge
The buffet primarily features traditional Indian dishes. I enjoyed a variety of offerings, including:
- Dal Makhani
- Chicken Tikka Masala
- Aloo Palak
- Malabar Fish Curry
But that’s not all; there was also a salad bar, soup (basil tomato soup), and desserts like fruit and pudding cake. I also tried a signature cocktail called “The Limitless,” but I wasn’t fond of its taste due to the inclusion of raw egg yolk.
Amenities and Services
The lounge features four private restrooms, one of which includes a shower. A staff member is always present to clean up after each use. However, I didn’t explore the area reserved for first-class passengers, which offers menu-based dining.
Conclusion
I had a delightful dinner and was thoroughly satisfied with my experience at the Maharaja Lounge. Its presence not only benefits Air India passengers but also travelers from all Star Alliance airlines at SFO. If I have the chance, I will definitely return, and now United Gold members have two fantastic options to relax: Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounge and Air India’s Maharaja Lounge.
